The Aalto puck

Alvar Aalto’s Savoy Vase is the worlds most iconic glass artwork. Created in 1936, when fascism was conquering the world, the shape was everything that fascism is not. Organic, flowery, funny.

TNSID was very honored when Iittala let us help them celebrate this iconic vase. How did we do it? With…the world’s most first non-fascist hockey puck!

The puck was featured in thousands of news outlets.

“Since the middle ages ice hockey has been played with round pucks. This is why we are proud to present the first non-round hockey puck in the history of mankind. The Aalto Puck is made in the same material as a regular hockey puck and behaves in the same way on ice with one fundamental difference. It has a built in randomness, it doesn’t bounce as a regular puck, it can, depending on how it’s hit, speed off in different ways and more importantly, by adding an element of chance it’s the most equal puck produced. Advantages are randomly given to either of the two competing teams. By adding the element of chance this small puck changes the big picture.”

“Why should sports projectiles all be round? Baseballs, basketballs, even footballs: slice them like a loaf of bread—all round. This is fascism! Down with round! At least that's what I imagine the Nordic Society for Invention and Discovery said (though, for the record, I have absolutely no evidence that the NSI&D has ever said anything like this). The project was inspired by and named after Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto, perhaps most famous for his chairs and lighting. (You might be familiar with his Paimio chair, which sits in the MoMA.) ”
